Quantity Surveyor (QS) – Tendering & Costing (Steel / Silo / Conveying Systems)

Location: Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

 

Role Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Quantity Surveyor (QS) to manage tendering, cost estimation, and commercial evaluation for projects involving structural steel fabrication, steel silos, and bulk material conveying systems.

This role is critical to securing projects, requiring strong technical understanding, cost accuracy, and commercial judgement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Tendering & Cost Estimation

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for structural steel fabrication & erection, steel silos, tanks, and conveying systems.
  • Interpret technical drawings (AutoCAD / GA / fabrication drawings) and specifications.
  • Perform material take-offs (MTO) and quantity calculations.
  • Source and evaluate supplier, subcontractor, and material quotations.
  • Prepare cost breakdown including material, labour, machinery, logistics, overheads, and margin.

2. Tender Submission & Commercial Strategy

  • Prepare and submit complete tender documents within deadlines.
  • Analyze tender requirements, specifications, and contract conditions.
  • Identify risk factors such as price fluctuation, scope gaps, and unclear specifications.
  • Propose pricing strategy aligned with management direction.
  • Support negotiation with clients on pricing, scope, and variations.

3. Cost Control & Project Handover

  • Provide budget benchmarks for awarded projects.
  • Support project team during project kick-off and execution.
  • Track and flag cost deviations against tendered values.
  • Assist in variation order (VO) pricing and claims.

4. Supplier & Subcontractor Management

  • Build and maintain supplier and subcontractor database.
  • Negotiate pricing for steel materials, fabrication works, and installation works.
  • Ensure cost competitiveness and supplier reliability.

Requirements

Technical & Experience

  • Diploma / Degree in Quantity Surveying, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 2–5 years experience in structural steel, fabrication, industrial, or mechanical projects.
  • Strong knowledge of steel materials, fabrication processes, and erection methods.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems (conveyors, silos) is an advantage.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong costing and analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good commercial awareness (profit, risk, margin).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (costing sheets and formulas).
  • Basic AutoCAD reading capability.
  • Good communication skills with engineers, suppliers, and management.

Preferred (Bonus)

  • Experience in steel fabrication workshop environment.
  • Experience handling full tender process (drawing to submission).
  • Familiar with ISO 9001 environment.
  • Experience in industrial or plant projects.
  • Knowledge of Malaysia steel supplier pricing.

Key KPIs

  • Cost savings from supplier negotiations.

Salary Range

  • Junior QS: RM3,000 – RM4,500
  • Intermediate: RM4,500 – RM6,500
  • Senior: RM6,500 – RM9,000+
